Summary: A comprehensive study of the occurrence and extent of air pollution along the Russion border in Sør-Varanger county started in 1988. -The measurement programme includes air quality, meteorological conditions and precipitation chemistry. The highest SO2 -concentrations in Norway are measured in this area. The smelters in Nikel and Zapoljarnij are the main sources of SO2 in the area.
