The main disciplines at NILU represent a balanced mix between field measurements, instrument development, chemical analyses, model development, air pollution forecasts, dose/response analyses, international co-ordination and training support.

NILU undertakes basic research as well as applied research and investigations of air pollution problems. NILU offers consulting services for public authorities, industries, international organisations and others.

NILU’s flexible project administration can offer a complete and specially designed programme for any air pollution problem, including the necessary scientific and technical personnel.

Some of the main disciplines covered by NILU are; geophysics, meteorology, chemistry, physics, electronics and information technology. In the fields of impacts and effects, NILU co-operates with other scientific groups. Exposure estimates is part of NILU's field of competence.
