PhD fellowship (3 Years)

Sources of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Developing Regions

NILU is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to take part in a research project on the sources of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in developing regions. The overall goal of the project is to study the regional and global scale implications of emissions associated with long range trans-boundary export of toxic wastes from rich countries to developing regions.

The main focus of the candidate’s research in this project will be to track the sources and source regions of selected industrial organic contaminants in developing regions, using West Africa as a case study. For this purpose, targeted air monitoring of POPs will be carried out at Cape Verde, and the candidate is expected to carry out the analysis, interpretation and publication of results in close collaboration with other project participants. The candidate is also expected to take part in other research activities within this project together with other scientists involved. The position is available for a limited period of 3 years, affiliated to the Department for Environmental Chemistry and located at our main office at Kjeller, just outside Oslo.

The following requirements to the applicants are essential:

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field (e.g. environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry or organic chemistry).
  • Good written and spoken English and preferably Norwegian

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Perform analytical work at the NILU chemical laboratory.
  • Be involved in relevant modeling activities to support interpretation of data.
  • Take part in field work.
  • Work as part of a team.
  • Contribute to NILU’s research on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
  • Obtain a PhD-degree within the project period

The research project is financed by the Research Council of Norway (FRIPRO), and is involving collaboration with universities in Oslo, Lancaster (UK) and Toronto (Canada). The candidate will be located at the NILU offices in Kjeller, but may also carry out parts of her/his research at Lancaster University and be involved in relevant field work in Africa. The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo (www.uio.no).  NILU offers competitive benefits such as group life-/accident insurances and pension. Further details about NILU can be found at www.nilu.no.

Informal enquiries about the available position can be directed to senior scientists Knut Breivik (kbr@nilu.no) or Martin Schlabach (msc@nilu.no). The application should include:

  • Application letter
  • CV (summarizing education, positions and academic work - scientific publications)
  • Copies of educational certificates, transcript of records and letters of recommendation
  • Names and contact details of 2-3 references (relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)

Foreign applicants are advised to attach an explanation of their University’s grading system. Please remember that all documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language. Applications with documents missing will not be considered further. Original documentation may be requested. Please note that application documents will not be returned with exception of original publications.

Applications should be sent to: NILU, P. O. Box 100, NO-2027 Kjeller, Norway or email: nilu@nilu.no as soon as possible and no later than 15 February 2012.
