Scientist from the United States, Norway, and Finland aboard the R/V Knorr will make port on the 12th of April in Tromsø. They are then mid-way through a two-leg cruise from the United States to Iceland via Tromsø, Svalbard, and the Greenland Sea. R/V Knorr is considered to be the best equipped research vessel in the world and is also famous for having supported the team who discovered the wreck of the RMS Titanic. 9 Apr 2008

For the first time, scientists from Norwegian Institute of Air Research (NILU) and Swedish Environmental Research Institute Ltd. (IVL) have traced sucralose, an artificial sweetener, also known as Splenda, first in the Norwegian and secondly in the Swedish environment. The chemical is found completely unchanged both in the Oslo fjord and in raw and treated wastewater. Due to the chemical’s long life span, from five to ten years, the scientists are worried about the potential effects on the environment. 25 Mar 2008

NILU, The Norwegian Institute for Air Research is about to complete the first annual cycle of pollution measurements at Troll Station in Antarctica. It is well known that pollution from all over the Northern hemisphere accumulates in the Arctic, causing severe problems in the Arctic food chain and reinforcing climate change in the region. NILU is now investigating to what degree transport mechanisms to and the pollution levels in Antarctica are comparable. 20 Jan 2008

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) in South Africa is preparing an efficient implementation of the sections of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (Act No. 39, 200) which details governmental air quality management planning requirements.
